How Often Should You Update Your Headshots?

How Often Should You Update Your Headshots?

Here Is What I Tell Every Client.

I get this question all the time, and I love that people ask it. It means they are actually thinking about their professional image, which matters more than most people realize.

The short answer is every one to two years for most professionals. But honestly, that number is just a starting point. The calendar does not always tell the whole story.

What I care about more than the timeline is this: does your headshot still look like you? Not the you from your last company, not the you from a few years and a few life changes ago. You, right now, on a really good day. That is what a great professional portrait is supposed to capture, and when there is a gap between your photo and who you actually are today, people notice. They might not be able to put a name to it, but something feels slightly off. And that tiny moment of doubt is not the first impression you want to make.

So When Is It Actually Time for a New One?

Here is what I walk my clients through. If any of these feel familiar, it is probably time.

Your appearance has changed

New haircut. Different glasses. You grew a beard or got rid of one. Your hair color is different. You lost or gained weight. Any of these counts. Your headshot should match the face someone sees when they meet you for the first time, whether that is in person, on a Zoom call, or at a conference. When there is a noticeable gap between the photo and the real you, trust takes a hit before you have even spoken.

Your career has moved forward

A headshot that worked when you were three levels below where you are now is not doing your current role any favors. If you have stepped into a leadership position, started your own business, or shifted industries, your professional portrait should reflect where you are now, and honestly, where you are headed. The image you put out in the world should match the professional you have become.

You have rebranded or repositioned

New website. New offer. A completely different direction for your business. If you have put real thought and energy into refreshing your brand, your headshot needs to be part of that. Visual consistency across your LinkedIn, your website, and your marketing materials is not just about aesthetics. It tells people that you are intentional, that every piece of your professional presence is connected and current.

Your current photo looks like it is from a different decade

Photography styles change. Lighting approaches change. What looked polished in 2015 can read as dated today without you realizing it. If your headshot has that overly formal stiffness, heavy retouching, or a backdrop that screams early 2000s studio session, people are picking up on that, even if they cannot quite say why. An updated headshot quietly signals that you are current, engaged, and paying attention to how you show up.

You have been avoiding using it

This one is more common than people admit. If you are hesitating to update your LinkedIn, skipping your bio photo on a website, or pulling an old event photo because you like it better than your actual headshot, that avoidance is costing you visibility. You deserve a photo you are genuinely proud to share. One that makes you think, yes, that is me, rather than, well, it will do for now.

Does Your Industry Change the Timeline?

It does, a little. Here is how it typically breaks down:

  • Executives and corporate professionals: every two years, or with any significant career change
  • Entrepreneurs and personal brand builders: every one to two years, more often if your audience or message has shifted
  • Realtors, financial advisors, attorneys, and other trust-based fields: annually, because clients are choosing you based heavily on how credible and current you look
  • Speakers, authors, and public-facing professionals: whenever your brand or positioning changes, which might be more often than once a year

The thing all of these have in common is that a professional headshot is not a one-and-done investment. It is a living part of your personal brand, and it needs to grow with you.

What About LinkedIn Specifically?

Your LinkedIn photo is doing more quiet work than you probably realize. It shows up beside your name every time you post, comment, send a message, or appear in a search result. It is often the very first thing someone sees when they look you up after meeting you at an event or getting your name from a referral.

Here is a quick check I suggest to anyone who is unsure. Pull up your LinkedIn profile on your phone right now. Does that person look like you on a normal good day today? Does the photo feel current and intentional? If someone who has never met you sees that image, does it accurately represent the professional you are right now? If you hesitated on any of those questions, there is your answer.

One More Thing Worth Saying

Updating too frequently is not necessary for most people. Your network builds recognition through your photo, and changing it every few months can actually work against that familiarity. But waiting too long is the far more common mistake.

If something has shifted, whether it is your look, your role, your brand, or simply the fact that you have been quietly avoiding your current photo for months, do not wait for a perfect moment. There is no perfect moment. There is just a decision to show up the way you deserve to.

Frequently Asked Questions:

How often should you update your professional headshots?

Most professionals should update their headshots every one to two years. That said, the calendar is only part of the answer. If your appearance has changed noticeably, if you have stepped into a new role, if your brand has evolved, or if you simply do not feel good about the photo you are using, those are all valid reasons to book a session sooner. The right question is not how old is my headshot, but does this photo still represent who I am today.

What are the signs that your headshot is outdated?

The clearest signs are: your appearance has changed and the photo no longer looks like you; your career has moved forward and the image no longer fits your current level; your brand or business has shifted and your photo does not match; the photo style looks visibly dated even if you have not changed much; or you find yourself avoiding using it because you are not happy with it. Any one of these is enough reason to update.

Can I use the same headshot on LinkedIn and my company website?

Yes, and it is actually a good idea. Consistency across platforms builds recognition and trust. When someone sees your face on LinkedIn and then visits your website or meets you at an event, everything lines up. That consistency is part of what makes a personal brand feel intentional. The key is making sure the photo is high quality and that it genuinely looks like you today.

How long does a professional headshot session take?

At Pooja Photography, most headshot sessions run between 30 minutes and one hour depending on the package and number of looks. We keep things efficient without rushing, so you have time to relax and settle in front of the camera. A lot of people tell me the session felt shorter than they expected, cos they were having a good time. Time flies when it is fun.

What should I wear to a professional headshot session?

Solid colors, structured pieces, and clothing that feels like you at your most polished tend to work best. Avoid very busy prints, large logos, or anything that pulls attention away from your face. I always send clients a full wardrobe guide before their session so there is no guesswork. The goal is to look like a confident, current version of yourself, not a costume version.

What is the difference between a headshot and personal branding photography?

A headshot is a focused portrait of your face, typically used for LinkedIn, your company website, or a speaker bio. It is clean, direct, and professional. Personal branding photography is a broader session that captures who you are in your environment. It includes the headshot but also shows you working, thinking, in your element. It gives you a full library of images to use across your website, social media, marketing, and press. If you are building a brand around yourself, branding photography gives you a lot more to work with.
